About Municipality

Villupuram Municipality was constituted in the year 1919 and was subsequently upgraded as IInd Grade Municipality from 01.10.1953. First Grade Municipality from 01.04.1973 and Selection Grade Municipality from 02.03.1988. It has a population of 140714 (2011 census) and an extent of 33.11 Sq. Km., The town is divided was 42 wards.

The Municipal Council comprising of 42.  Ward Councillors is headed by Chairperson, who is elected by voters of the town. The Councillors elected a Vice-Chairperson among them.

The executive wing is headed by a commissioner and he is assisted by a team of officials like Municipal Health Officer, Municipal Engineer, Town Planning Officer, Manager, Revenue officer, Assistant Programmer and other officers.

Up gradation as Second Grade Municipality            :   01-10-1953,  G.O.No.265,  dated: 01-04-1953

Up gradation as First Grade Municipality                :   01-04-1973

Up gradation as Selection Grade Municipality         :   02-03-1988, G.O.No.15, dated: 02-03-1988

Inclusion of certain Areas in Municipal Limits         :   GO.(MS) No.33, dated: 31.01.2011
