The River Noyyal is the ultimate disposal source for town drainage system. All the storm water is discharge into this river. The salient feature of the Corporation is given below:
Features:
Area – 159.35 sq.km
Number of wards – 60
Population as per 2011 Census – 8,77,778
Total length of roads – 1332.84 Kms (including National &state Highways Roads)
The Noyyal river flowing from West to East direction in the middle of the town and two channels flowing from South to north direction namely Jammanai odai and Sangilipallam odai are finally joins with Noyyal river. Nallaru channel flows 2 Kms away from North boundary of the Corporation limit which carries 80% of the Northern side storm water during rainy season. 66.51% of the existing roads have storm water drains.
EXISTING SCENARIO
River Noyyal flows at the center of the city and divides the city into two parts.
- North Part of River Noyyal
- South Part of River Noyyal (interlinked with Jammanai odai & Sangilipallam odai)
- The Nallaru Odai is situated at Northern boundary of Corporation
The three drainage basins comprise several major drains which carry the outfalls of rain water in the rainy season & waste water from houses are finally disposes into River Noyyal and Nallaru Odai.
RECEIVING BODY
Ultimate receiving body of the surface runoff from the town is the River Noyyal and interception points may be the channels namely Jammanai odai, Sangilipallam odai and Nallaru odai. All the above rivers and odai are situated within Tiruppur town and the Nallaru odai flows at northern boundary of Tiruppur City.
Considering Noyyal River as ultimate receiving body, access to the same for runoff from North part, through Culverts across College Road and Uthukuli Road.
DESCRIPTION OF ZONES
The study area is considered in 3 zones based on the terrain and the physical features. They are grouped as North zone, South zone and Northern Boundary of the town.
North zone is bounded by the North side of river Noyyal. Highest level is 320m and lowest is 295m. The area is densely populated. The ultimate receiving body of this zone is river Noyyal.
South zone is bounded South side of river Noyyal. Highest level is 310m and lowest is 290m. The area is densely populated. The ultimate receiving body of this zone is river Noyyal.
Northern boundary of the town. Highest level is 310m and lowest is 295m. The area is densely populated. The ultimate receiving body of this zone is river Nallaru.
- Total length of Storm water Drain : 1506.468km
- Open drain : 1431.252km
- Closed drain : 75.216km
SMART CITY PROJECT
Under the smart city mission, the work of Noyyal river front development is being executed at a cost of 177.69 Crores. The components of this work consists of construction of baby canal on either side of the Noyyal river, roads on either side and RCC lining river bund of bed on either side of Noyyal river. In the baby canal, 58 outlets from different part of the corporation storm water drain & waste water is collected and treated in 4 STP’s located on the bank of the Noyyal River. The waste water which are collected will be treated and discharge into the river after suitable treating in the STP’s.
