Temples & Other interesting Places
1. Arthanareeswarar Temple :
In the South-East of the town is a hillock of 580 m high. At on the hill is located the famous Arthanareeswarar Temple and a Utchi Pillaiyar temple. This temple is pilgrim’s centre that could be reached by a Ghat road which was formed during the year 1987 and also by steps. People in and around visit this temple. These days Girivalam is gaining importance among the pilgrims. The temple complex spread over an area of 5 hectare. On the east of the temple there is a Tank and a Park. Every year in the month of June The famous festival in the Arthanareeswarar temple known as ‘Vaikasi Visagha Car Festival’ is celebrated. People from all over the town and the region visit the temple and participate in Girivalam during the festival. This festival is conducted for 15 days.
2. Kailasanathar Temple :
Kailasanathar temple is the second most important temple in the town. The temple is predominant by its Rajagopuram, the entrance tower that stands 76 feet (23 m) high. The temple is bounded by North Mada street, South Mada street, Theppakkulam street and Manager Lane. This temple is located in the heart of the town.
Others :
Apart from these temples, other temples such as Om Bathrakaliamman Temple, Periya Mariamman Temple, Abathukatha Vinayagar Temple, Murugan Temple, Malaikavalar Temple, Pundiswara Temple etc. are other important sites.
In addition, there are many temples on the hill, enroute to the Arthnareeswara temple. They are :
• Arumugasamy Temple
• Veerapathran Temple
• Pasuvan Temple
• Malaipathai Nagar Ayyanar Temple and
• Arubatham padi Subramaniayam Temple.
