Thanjavur Municipality was constituted on 09.05.1866 vide G.O.No.471 R.D. & L.A. as Third Grade Municipality. It has been upgraded to Second Grade Municipality from 1933 and upgraded to First Grade Municipality from 21.03.43 vide G.O.Ms.No.3503 R.D.&L.A. and upgraded to selection grade municipality from 01.11.63 Vide G.O.Ms.No.2163 R.D.&.L.A. and upgraded to Special Grade Municipality from 05.03.1983 Vide G.O.Ms.No.471 R.D.&. L.A.{Under sub-section(3) of section 1 of the Thanjavur City Municipal Corporation Act 2013 (Tamil Nadu Act 24 of 2013),the Governor of TamilNadu hereby appoints the 19th Febraury, 2014 as the date on which the said act shall come into force vide Tamilnadu Government gazzette no.29,Dated:17.02.2014

Location of Municipal Office

Thanjavur is a City Corporation as well as District Head Quarters. .The Corporation office is situated nearly 1km south from bus stand, 5 km north from new bus stand and is near to railway station
