Location of the Town

Tenkasi Town is a District Headquarter of Tenkasi District. It is located at 54 K.m North west of Tirunelveli Town, on the Quilon – Tirunelveli Highway. The town is also connected by Broad gage Railway line Viz Tirunelveli – Shengottai line and Virudunagar – Quilon line. The Railway Station is located in the heart of the town.

Tenkasi became very famous due to its location near the famous tourist Center of Tamilnadu namely, Courtallam and also the location of historic famous Kasiviswanathar temple at heart of the town.

Tenkasi was elevated to Municipal Status in the year 1965. The population as per 1961 census was 34,003 and the population as per 2001 census was 63,432 The present population as per 2011 census is 70530 .The town spread over an area of 26.15 Sq.km

The Timber trade is very popular here in view of proximity of forest area on the Western side. Good number of rice and flour mills are found in various part of the town. Ice factories, Lath works , Printing presses are other additions to industrial sector in this town. Considerable number of people are engaged in weaving of handlooms cloths like lungies, Sarees etc.

The famous Arulmigu Kasiviswanathar Temple was constructed by Pandiya king Parakirama pandiyan 300 years ago and renovated during the year 1990. About 25,000 to 50,000 tourists are visiting this temple every year. During the Courtallam Season & Sabarimalai Season more number of tourists are visiting this place.

Transportation Linkages

Tenkasi is linked with Tirunelveli by State High ways road. It is linked with Quilon and Thirumangalam by National Highways road. Tenkasi is also linked with Quilon , Virudunagar and Tirunelveli by Railways The town is also linked with Madurai city by a brought gauge line.

Temperature

The prevailing climate of this town is mostly pleasant. The temperature is about 30 C most of the months except during May and September. The temperature is little above 30 C during May and September.

Rain fall

Tenkasi is receiving rainfall during summer, Northwest monsoon and Northeast monsoon seasons. The annual average rainfall of Tenkasi is 2.86 mm. The wind velocity is mild in most of the months except July and August. The wind velocity is high during June to August. Tenkasi is a town getting bright sunlight during all the months of an year except on the days of rainfall.

Nature of Soil

Tenkasi town has predominantly red soil. The soil of the wet lands located in this town is mostly sandy loam. The rocky and hard soils are also found in certain places of this town.
INFRASTRUCTURE

The Tenkasi Town has got very good tourist importance because of its location near to Courtalam. The availability of vast wasteland will serve for future developmental activities and it will become a very big town in near future.

Tenkasi Municipality has no organized or planned commercial Complexes. The wholesale and retail sale commercial activities are concentrated along the commercially viable area Swami Sannathi and Amman Sannathi Street.

Transport

This town has got good road net work.The National High ways (NH-208) Quilon to Thirumangalam road passes through the town and State Highway and other district roads passes through the town. Tenkasi is linked with Tirunelveli by State High ways road. Tenkasi is also linked with Quilon, Virudunagar and Tirunelveli by Railways. The town is also linked with Madurai city by a brought gauge line.

Medical facilities

The Government Head quarter’s hospital with 136 beds is located near the new bus stand. There are 15 private Hospitals more than 15 Private clinics are also located in this town. The Government Women and Children hospitals, Siddha hospitals and Homeopathy hospitals are located in Tenkasi –Tirunelveli main road.

Recreational facilities

There are five Cinema Theaters located in this town. There are no other entertainment facilities available in this town. The Municipality maintains four small parks. No amusement parks available in this town. Rotary club and Lions club are available in this town.
