Sankarankovil Town was constituted as Third Grade Municipality on 01.04.1964 as per G.O.No.363, dated 14.02.1964 and upgraded as Second Grade Municipality on 13.11.1978 as per G.O.No.194, dated 10.02.1972. Again it was upgraded as First Grade Municipality on 22.05.1998.
