History of Municipality
LOCATION :
Periyakulam is a small town most picturesquely situated on the palm fringed banks of the Varaganathi , a perennial river with the great wall of the Kodaikanal hills. The Town consists of revenue villages namely, Thenkarai, Vadakarai and Keela Vadakarai. There are roads running westwards and northwards to the hills. The Town has been developing gradually but the extent has not increased on account of the fact that Periyakulam is purely agricultural town and is located far away from the railway communication. This is a century old Municipality located at the foot of the Kodaikanal hills.
Area of the Municipal limit is 2.11 sq km . This town is having 30 wards at present as per G.O. M .S . No. 189 MAWS dated 20.8.1996. Wards 28,29 are reserved for SC/ST and wards No 9,10,11,20,22,23,27 and 30 are reserved for Women. Out of wards allotted to Women , wards no’s 8 and 25 are reserved for SC/ST Women.
