History and Growth of the Town
Nelliyalam Municipality is situated at Taluk head Quarters. It has vast jurisdictions comparing within two Revenue Villages Viz Devala Village and Nelliyalam Village within Two Revenue Taluk of Gudalur Taluk and Pandalur Taluk with an area of 94.28 Sq.Kms with population of 44590 as per 2011 Census. The present population estimated 50000. The are 44 Habitation and 18 habitation are slum area. The area divided into 21 wards for Administrative purposes. Nelliyalam Municipality is connected by Kerala and Karnataka State Roads. The temperature of the town ranges between 25º and 50º C during Summer and 10º to 35º C during winter the town gets heavy rainfall during bother the south west monsoon. (June to August) and North east monsoon (October to November).
The inhabitants of the area are mostly poor laborers, working in Tea Estates and paddy fields etc.Most of the living populations are economically weaker section require vast improvements in all aspects. The main agricultural crops of this area is Tea, Paddy and Pepper etc,.
SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES AND FEATURES OF MUNICIPALITY
Nelliyalam Municipality is maintaining about 99.00 K.M length of roads and about 17.40 K.M. CC footpath. The drinking water needs of the Town area is supplied by three Gravity Sources and 46 Power pumps water supply schemes which are supplying drinking water.
GENERAL INFORMATION OF THE MUNICIPALITY
This was constituted as village Panchayat in the year 1951 and subsequently upgraded as Town Panchayat with effect from 29.03.1967, this was upgraded as special grade Town Panchayat and from 1.10.2004 on wards this was upgraded as III Grade Municipality and functioning awardingly. The Headquarters of Nelliyalam III Grade Municipality and its office situated at Pandalur on Calicut to Vythiri – Gudalur main road. This is border area of Kerala and Karnataka states and tourists from various places including to their states routed through Pandalur for there joining to Udhagamandalam and important Hill station in Nilgiri District known as Queen of Hills.
