SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
- To manage the solid waste accumulate in the Mannargudi town, 3 Sanitary Inspectors, 7 Sanitary Work Supervisors, 4 drivers, 6 daily wage drivers and 103 sanitary workers are appointed and they are doing their best to keep the town clean.
- There are totally 33 wards in the Municipality. Of the total 268 streets in this town, the solid waste management is being carried out by a private contractor in 40 streets.
- In the solid waste disposal works, 20 tricycles, 30 push-carts, 40 dumper boxes, and 30 compactor boxes are used in the primary waste collection.
- In the secondary solid waste collection, 2 tipper Lorries of the Municipality, 2 dumper lorries, 1 compactor lorry, and one tipper tractor are involved. A tipper tractor owned by a private party is also involved in the secondary solid waste collection.
- The solid wastes accumulate in the places like marriage halls, hotels and broiler centers are managed by a private contractor.
- In the Mannargudi town, daily at least 24 Metric tons of solid wastes are collected and dumped at the Compost Yard.
- A compost yard is situated on the Depot Road spreading over a area of 356 acres. It has been functioning in the same place for the past 50 years. The solid wastes collected from different parts of the town are dumped here and allowed to decompose. A separate room for the security, deep bore well and a over head tank is also provided there. There is also a platform at a length of 14.35 meters. In the front yard of the compost yard, bamboo bushes are cultivated.
- One more compost yard measuring 3.22 acres is situated in RP Sivam Nagar area. In the compost yard, a compost fertilizer manufacturing unit is going to be set up at the cost of Rs. 2.58 crores under the Integrated Urban Development Fund(?). Proper proposals have been sent to the competent authorities and funds sanction is awaited.
