Water Supply

Water Supply

HISTORY

The primary source of water for Kovilpatti town is the Tamiraparani River with headworks situated in Seevalaperi village approximately 51 km from the town. A Combined Water Supply Scheme (CWSS) catering to 29 wayside villages, Sattur and Kovilpatti Muicipality and 3 town panchayats namely Kayathar, Kazlugumalai and Ettayapuram is presently operational. This existing water supply system was commissioned in the year 1976 for a design population of 90,000 (2004). Since the population of the town as per 2001 census itself is 87,458, it is inferred that the existing water supply to Kovilpatti has reached its saturation stage. It has been reported that approximatey 102.40 LL of water is pumped daily from the headworks.  The radial collector well installed on the river bed is equipped with seven radial arms installed for a total length of 220-m(7 nos). Water collected in the Collector well is presently pumped with the help of two 170 HP pumps.

BOOSTER PUMP STATIONS

A total of four booster stations are located between the headworks at Seevalaperi and Kovilpatti Town . A booste station at Rajapudukudi (16 k.m) with two 60 HP centrifugal pumps . Salaipudur booster station (24k.m) with two 50 HP centrifugal pumps followed by Savalaperi Booster station (29 k.m ) with two 150 HP centrifugal pumps form part of the relay pumping stystem . The terminal booster station located at Ramasamy Park in Kovilpatti is equipped with two 75 HP centrifugal pumps conveying water to the existing overhead tanks through a network of feeder mains.

EXISTING FEEDER MAIN

Water is pumped from the Kovilpatti Town Booster station at Ramasamy Park , to existing Overe Head Tanks (OHT) by pumping. Feeder mains are laid from the Booster Pump Section to different storage reservoirs at various places . The diameter of existing feeder main various from 250 mm CI to 200 mm AC and 160mm PVC respectively . The overall condition of the existing feeder mains within the town is found to be satisfactory.

EXISTING STORAGE RESERVOIRS

The total storage capacity of elevated service reservoirs is 28.25 lakh – litres , Which are located 7 places within the town . for the Present receipt of water supply from the CWSS ( 50LL per day approx) , existing storage fecilities are slightly more than 50 % of the requirement of supply during normal season. However , based on present stage (2004) water demand of 8.14 MLD ,the existing storage of 28.25LL works out to a ratio of 34%.
