Then this Municipality is upgraded as II grade Municipality as G.O. 2008 RD & LA Dated 05.10.1966 and upgraded as I grade Municipality as per G.O.85(MA5) MA&WS Dated 22.05.1998. This Municipality is functioning as I grade Municipality till date. The area of the Municipality is 7.23 Sq.Km. covering 33 wards. The population of the Municipality is 75675 as per 2011 census. Municipality is situated at the foot-hill of Western ghats in Theni District. It is popularly known to be a Cardamom city. Location of the Municipality as consider with the geographical structure of the town, it almost lie at the centre of the town. It is on the Madurai to Cochin National Highways.
